Yellow Thread Tape: Uses, Benefits & Gas Pipe Guide
Yellow Thread Tape: Uses, Benefits, and How to Choose the Right PTFE Tape for Gas Pipes
Yellow thread tape, also known as yellow PTFE tape, yellow Teflon tape, or yellow gas thread seal tape, is commonly used to seal compatible threaded connections in gas piping systems.
Unlike general-purpose white PTFE tape, yellow thread tape is typically marketed for gas-related applications. However, color alone does not guarantee gas approval. Always verify the product rating and relevant certifications.
This guide explains what yellow thread tape is, where it is used, how it compares with white tape, and what buyers should check before purchasing.
What Is Yellow Thread Tape?
Yellow thread tape is a PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) thread sealing material. PTFE is valued for chemical resistance and low friction. Properly applied tape fills small gaps between mating threads and helps reduce leakage.
Yellow PTFE thread seal tape is commonly associated with natural gas and LPG systems where permitted by applicable regulations and product approvals.
Its main functions include filling microscopic thread gaps, reducing friction during assembly, and supporting sealing performance when installed correctly.
What Is Yellow Thread Tape Used For?
● Natural gas piping: Gas-rated yellow PTFE tape may be used on compatible threaded metal pipe connections, subject to local codes and manufacturer instructions.
● LPG and propane systems: A specifically approved product may be used where its gas type, pressure, temperature, and connection requirements are met.
● Gas equipment connections: Certain threaded connections require approved sealants, but flare and compression sealing surfaces generally should not be wrapped with PTFE tape.
Is Yellow PTFE Tape Safe for Gas Lines?
Yellow PTFE tape can be appropriate for gas lines only when the specific tape is rated for the intended gas application and the connection type permits thread sealant. Do not assume that any yellow tape is gas-approved. Follow the product instructions, applicable codes, and equipment manufacturer requirements. Gas piping work and leak testing should be performed by qualified personnel.
Yellow Thread Tape vs White Thread Tape
Yellow thread tape is commonly associated with gas piping, while white PTFE tape is often used for water and general plumbing. However, color alone does not determine suitability: verify the actual product rating and approval before use.

How to Apply Yellow PTFE Thread Seal Tape
1.Clean the male threads and remove dirt, oil, and old sealing material.
2.Confirm the fitting uses a compatible thread-sealed connection and permits PTFE tape.
3.For conventional right-hand male threads, wrap clockwise when viewing the pipe end so tightening does not unwind the tape.
4.Keep the tape flat and tensioned. Follow the tape manufacturer’s guidance for wrap count and keep loose tape out of the pipe opening.
5.Assemble according to the fitting manufacturer’s instructions. Have qualified personnel conduct the required approved gas leak test before service.
What Certifications Should Buyers Check?
When purchasing yellow PTFE thread seal tape for gas applications, buyers should verify that the product meets the relevant standards and certification requirements of their target market.
Different countries and regions may have different requirements for gas thread sealing materials. Commonly recognized certifications and standards include:
1. UL Certification – United States
UL certification is an important consideration for buyers in the United States and North American markets.
UL-listed PTFE thread seal tapes are evaluated according to applicable requirements for their specified uses. Buyers should verify the UL listing, product identification, and approved applications before selecting tape for gas piping systems.
FOREVERSEAL® offers UL-listed PTFE thread seal tape under UL File No. MH48783. Buyers should confirm that the specific product model is covered by the listing.
2. DVGW / EN 751-3 – Germany and Europe
EN 751-3 specifies requirements for PTFE tapes and strings used as sealing materials for certain metallic threaded joints in contact with gases and hot water.
DVGW certification provides independent verification of compliance with applicable requirements for specified products.
FOREVERSEAL® offers DVGW-certified PTFE thread seal tape grades for applicable gas sealing applications.
3. AGA Certification – Australia
AGA certification is relevant to gas products supplied to the Australian market.
For gas thread sealing applications, buyers should verify that the selected PTFE tape is covered by the appropriate AGA certification and approved for its intended use.
FOREVERSEAL® offers AGA-certified PTFE thread seal tape for specified gas applications.
Why Do Certifications Matter?
For importers, distributors, and professional buyers, verified product certifications help demonstrate compliance with applicable technical requirements and provide confidence in product selection.
Always check the certificate number, approved product model, scope of application, and validity before placing an order.
How to Choose Yellow PTFE Tape for Wholesale
● Application fit: Confirm gas type, thread connection, operating conditions, and applicable approvals.
● Thickness and density: Compare verified technical specifications instead of assuming yellow tape is always thicker or denser than white tape.
● Manufacturing consistency: Review width, thickness tolerance, winding quality, and roll length.
● Quality documents: Request the technical data sheet and applicable certificates for the exact offered grade.
● OEM and packaging: Confirm spool style, label artwork, carton packing, minimum order quantity, and sample availability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Yellow Thread Tape
Is yellow thread tape the same as yellow Teflon tape?
These terms are often used interchangeably for yellow PTFE thread seal tape. Teflon™ is a trademark; PTFE is the generic material name.
Can yellow thread tape be used for natural gas?
Yes, if the specific product is approved for that gas service and permitted for the connection by applicable rules.
Can yellow PTFE tape be used for propane or LPG?
Some gas-rated grades can. Check the exact product approval and service limits rather than relying on color.
Can yellow thread tape be used for water?
Material resistance to water does not establish potable-water approval. For drinking-water applications, check the relevant product approval, such as WRAS or ACS where required.
How many wraps of yellow thread tape should I use?
There is no universal number. Follow the tape manufacturer's instructions for the particular tape grade and thread size.
Is thicker yellow PTFE tape always better?
No. Thickness and density must be evaluated alongside thread compatibility, approved service, and installation requirements.
Conclusion
Yellow thread tape is a useful PTFE thread sealing material for compatible gas piping connections, but the right choice depends on verified gas suitability, approvals, and proper installation—not tape color alone. For wholesale purchases, compare technical data, certification scope, consistency, and packaging options.
